Beat the Blahs: Your February Calendar
Why not go where many have not dared venture before, and try out an opera? If the idea makes you tremble, just think of it like this: before there was country-western music, before there were television soap operas, there were operas. They represent some of the highest achievements in the arts. And this month the Opera 2015 Festival continues, through Feb 21 at various locations.
Also, Mozart’s opera classic The Magic Flute in a new State Opera production premieres Feb 5 and 7 at the Theatre of the Estates, with repeat performances on Feb 9, 15, and 27.
Or if you’d like to try a lighter opera, you can see a production of The Zvíkov Imp (Zvíkovský Rarášek) by Czech composer Vítězslav Novák (1870-1949). It’s presented by the Prague Conservatory at the school’s theatre Divadlo Na Rejdišti on Feb 18 and 20.
From the Incredulous to the Sublime
If you prefer to go in still another direction, February is a good month to go Psycho – to the unbelievably shocking Hitchcock thriller, that is. The Prague Symphony Orchestra-FOK will broadcast the film to the live accompaniment of the orchestra Feb 19 at The Municipal House. Aside from the highly emotional music beautifully performed by the FOK, this classic film with its eternally famous murder-in-the-shower scene will surely rock you out of any February doldrums. And it should be interesting to see this 1960 shocker broadcast in the beautifully understated Art Nouveau Smetana Hall. Surely a first in the building’s history!
But if you’re looking for something a little more peaceful, historic, and spiritual, Collegium 1704 and Chorale’s performance of the eternal, unfinished Great Mass in C Minor by Mozart will be a calming way to see February out. It’s scheduled for Feb 24 in another classic venue, The Rudolfinum.
You can find more details about all the February performances by checking our Events Calendar. To access the Calendar:
Click on the black “Calendar” tab at the top of any Opus Osm page. Click on ‘Events Calendar’ in the drop-down menu, and you’ll see a large calendar with the title of every performance for each day. Click on any performance title to see its basic details.
Click on the little “Events” calendar in the upper right corner of any Opus Osm page (Events – Click orange dates). Click on any orange date and you’ll see a list of titles for that day’s performances. Then click on any title, and you’ll see the performance details.
But be aware: If every date on the Calendar is orange, it’s because there are performances every single day of that month (non-performance days are gray).
More Ways to Find Something to Do
Also, check the far right column on every Opus Osm page except the Home page. There you’ll see our listing of high-quality Performances for 200 Kč or Less (who said the classics have to be expensive?); Performances Out of Prague (in case you’re “not in”); and News Notes (interesting new exhibitions, CD releases, tidbits, etc). – oo
