Contest #3: Opera Olio

Like a crossword without the grid ...

Do you have trouble remembering the composer and title of operas? Can you identify the music but not the title? Or the title but not the composer?

If you have a “face blindness” for opera — you can sing every word in the shower, but when asked you can’t say the name of the opera or its composer — this quiz may help.

Here are 15 well-known operas — their titles and composers. Except they had a kind of mash-up in the shower, and everything’s all mixed up.

In the first column, the blank is the first word of the opera title, followed directly by the first name of its composer.

The third column contains the rest of the opera title. And the fourth column gives the last name of the composer.

Your task is to fill in the first blank: By reading the second and fourth columns you’ll see the name of the composer. For a hint at the opera title, look at the third column. Then fill in the rest of the title in the first column. It’s a kind of musical chairs, online.

It may not cure your “face blindness,” but it can be some fun. And it suggests some new opera titles, not to mention some pretty interesting-sounding composers!

Good luck! Have fun! (Answers are at the bottom of the page.)
